More than 4,600 students attend Abilene Christian University, a well-regarded private school affiliated with the Churches of Christ. ACU’s science programs, including premed, attract top students, and the school’s journalism program is also widely recognized. In all, 62 majors are available to undergraduates, and the Honors College challenges gifted students with global study opportunities. ACU is committed to faith-based education. The university’s master of science degree, for instance, trains students to integrate their spiritual beliefs and their social work practice. ACU students’ daily chapel requirement offers a variety of opportunities, including small-group worship, faith-based conversations, and inspirational guest speakers. Most of ACU’s students volunteer regularly, often in the greater Abilene community. Spring break programs offer intensive mission opportunities as well.
The 208-acre campus is about a three-hour drive from the Metroplex, but ACU students often find their fun closer to home. First settled as a railroad outpost, Abilene has become a true college town, with three universities and six other schools of higher education. And while older students often live off campus, first- and second-year students stay on campus in single-gender dormitories. Many take part in campus social clubs, which function much like fraternities and sororities. Popular annual events include FilmFest, which features student-produced work, and Culture Show, a theatrical production sponsored by the International Students’ Association. ACU has won 59 national athletic championships and boasts an impressive track team.
