Houston Baptist University is a Christian liberal arts university dedicated to the development of the intellect, moral character, and spiritual life of its students. Established in 1960, HBU offers more than 40 majors and preprofessional programs. From accounting to art, from communications to Christianity, HBU fosters a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. The new Honors College emphasizes the great works of antiquity and modern classics as a foundation for the development of critical thinking. Because of HBU’s proximity to downtown, students benefit from internship and mentoring opportunities with nearby businesses.
Students may live on campus in one of three residence colleges, including the new Lake House, or in the University Apartments. HBU has recently dedicated two arts-related facilities: the Morris Cultural Arts Center, which houses performance spaces and three museum collections, and the University Academic Center, which has instructional space for the Honors College as well as the art and communications programs, including the award-winning student newspaper.
HBU students add depth to their college experience through involvement in intramurals, club sports, and a variety of social, service, and honor organizations. The basketball and baseball programs attract significant numbers of student fans, and HBU continues to expand its athletic program as it moves into NCAA Division I competition. The Community Life and Worship program allows students to develop their faith through on-campus worship services, small-group studies, community service, and mission opportunities.
Located in southwest Houston, the 158-acre HBU campus is within five miles of the Galleria shopping center and is close to many other diversions as well, including top-notch museums, comedy clubs, and restaurants.
