Lovely French-inspired buildings overlook peaceful Lake Elmendorf on this 52-acre residential campus in San Antonio. Founded in 1895 as a private Catholic school, Our Lady of the Lake University today enrolls approximately 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students. The university, which students affectionately call “the Lake,” features small classes, individualized learning opportunities, and connections to meaningful service and internship options. Undergraduates choose from more than 50 majors. Recognizing the need for students to become global citizens, the university provides a dual-language emphasis in all undergraduate majors and offers some classes in both English and Spanish.

The Lake opened the state’s first school of social work in 1942. Today students honor the university’s service-oriented roots by taking advantage of volunteer opportunities such as the Meals on Wheels program. In fact, every undergraduate takes part in a service-learning course prior to graduation. Student fans flock to see the men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams play. Lakeapalooza offers live music and other diversions during the annual Armadillo Pride Week, and downtown San Antonio—just three miles from campus—provides a variety of entertainments, including excellent regional Mexican and Tex-Mex food and Spurs basketball games at the AT&T Center.
