Change is afoot at Paul Quinn College, which prides itself on being the oldest African American liberal arts college in Texas. A business casual dress code is in effect Monday through Thursday to prepare students for the realities of the corporate world after graduation. The college’s academic program, anchored by a core curriculum, has been strategically reduced to 11 majors, among which are business, education, biology, and legal studies (replacing the criminal justice degree). And in 2008 Paul Quinn’s Continuing Education program expanded its community involvement by offering youth and adult classes.
Originally founded in Austin as a trade school, Paul Quinn eventually relocated to its current site in Dallas, where it considers itself the “southern gateway” to the city. Attractions such as the Dallas Museum of Art and the Deep Ellum entertainment district are within eight miles of the pastoral 130-acre campus, where rolling hills and wooded areas provide a respite from the urban activity that surrounds the college. Students participate in various extracurricular groups, including the esteemed gospel choir. Paul Quinn’s athletic program includes volleyball, basketball, baseball, and men’s and women’s track teams, all of which compete in the NAIA. Soccer recently was added as a club sport and may achieve varsity status by 2010.
