San Antonio’s oldest Catholic university is also one of its most attractive. The 135-acre campus sits northwest of the city’s historic downtown and is anchored by the stately St. Louis Hall, which was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. Eleven apartment-style residence halls (both single-gender and coeducational) are surrounded by green space, and a new facility will open in fall 2009. St. Mary’s has more than 45 undergraduate degree and preprofessional programs, and the biological sciences and international relations programs are especially popular. Many graduate students take advantage of a one-year MBA program, while a part-time evening law program caters to nontraditional students.

Given the Catholic heritage of the school, students often balance their academics with community service. The Service Learning Center sponsors a number of community-based initiatives, including immersion trips and leadership programs. Twice a year, St. Mary’s participates in Continuing the Heritage, a day of service that partners university students with local nonprofits and other community organizations.

Students also spend their downtime playing on or cheering for the school’s varsity sports teams, which compete at the NCAA Division II level and in the Heartland Conference. Both the men’s and women’s golf teams have been nationally recognized on a regular basis. After hours, students enjoy easy access to the First Friday ArtWalk, the Alamo, and the historic River Walk just southeast of campus.
