This small liberal arts university in the Texas Hill Country town of Kerrville is expanding, having boosted enrollment, added faculty, and begun enhancements to the campus during the last decade. The Mountaineer Center, a state-of-the-art facility, will house Schreiner’s sports programs, the campus recreation and fitness center, and is expected to open in 2009, along with a new freshman residence hall.

Schreiner University has come a long way from its roots as a military prep school. Today more than 1,000 undergraduates take classes on the bucolic 170-acre campus, which is within an hour of San Antonio and 90 minutes from Austin. Students live in one of six residence halls and apartment complexes, and a community bike-share system allows them to zip to class and elsewhere on campus. Schreiner’s education, life sciences, graphic design, and business programs are especially strong among its 27 majors. A new major in communication studies was added in 2008. More than 40 student organizations (Campus Ministry is popular) and eight NCAA Division III sports teams provide extracurricular activities.

Given its enviable Hill Country location, Schreiner offers students many opportunities to get back to nature. The Schreiner Outdoor Adventure Program (SOAP) hosts camping, climbing, and hiking trips to Enchanted Rock and Big Bend National Park. Kerrville’s downtown square is within walking distance of the university.
