This historically black Christian institution cultivates a holistic approach, nurturing its students through daily chapel and a core curriculum. Nearly 300 undergraduates attend Southwestern Christian College, where they take classes in history, the humanities, English, and other subjects toward bachelor’s degrees in biblical studies and religious education or a two-year liberal arts associate program. Despite its small size, SWCC does foster a Greek system of national fraternities and sororities and offers limited on-campus housing. The men’s and women’s basketball and track and field teams compete in Region V of the National Junior College Athletic Association. SWCC also sponsors honor societies and other clubs and organizations, including theater, band, and chorale. In fact, SWCC is known for its music education and choral groups. The fine-arts building houses a sound recording studio, and some of SWCC’s alumni have gone on to successful careers in the Christian music industry.

SWCC is located in Terrell, a former railroad depot town linking East Texas and California that became industrialized after World War II. The school is very much a part of the town, especially since the campus is home to the historic Round House. Built in the 1800s by Terrell’s founder, this octagonal residence is one of only 20 of its kind in the United States. Students also benefit from SWCC’s proximity to three of the best fishing lakes in the state. The campus is just 20 miles from Dallas, putting students within easy driving distance of the city’s downtown museums, restaurants, and nightlife.
