Texas Forest Country’s towering pines provide a spectacular backdrop for Stephen F. Austin State University’s beautiful 412-acre campus. Founded as a teacher’s college in 1923, SFA has grown into a comprehensive regional institution that offers more than 80 undergraduate degrees and 120 areas of study. More than 10,000 undergraduates benefit from traditional classroom instruction combined with outdoor labs, real-world experiences, and award-winning research projects. SFA’s education and nursing programs are particularly strong, with students in these programs consistently earning among the highest marks on Texas professional examinations. In fall 2009 the Early Childhood Research Center will open, further enhancing the education program.
About half of all full-time students live on campus in one of 16 facilities that offer a range of floor plans and unique features. Greek life is popular with SFA students, and more than 200 organizations ensure that there’s an extracurricular activity for everyone. The student center features a three-story atrium, a food court, a movie theater, a Starbucks, and a Barnes and Noble bookstore. A state-of-the-art recreation center opened recently and features a climbing wall and a lazy river.
The university is in Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas. Visitors are drawn to the downtown area for its charming red brick streets, historical buildings, gift and specialty stores, and annual festivals. SFA’s Cole Art Center at the Old Opera House on Main Street also attracts students and locals year-round with art exhibitions and film screenings.
