On the border of Texas and Arkansas, Texas A&M University—Texarkana is known for its career-oriented programs in three colleges: Arts & Sciences and Education; Business; and Health and Behavioral Sciences. The university awards degrees in 36 areas, including business, education, criminal justice, electrical engineering, and computer science. Its nursing program recently was reaccredited with the highest rating possible. More than 1,600 juniors, seniors, and graduate students from Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma make up the student body, enjoying the lowest tuition rates in the state. (Students from Arkansas and Oklahoma attend at in-state tuition rates.) A&M—Texarkana also accommodates its students by offering flexible class schedules, Web-based courses, and online degree programs.

The university is poised to expand in the coming years as it completes a new 375-acre campus about five miles from its current location on the grounds of Texarkana College.

The Science and Technology Building recently was completed, and construction on the Multipurpose Library Building will begin soon. This second building will open in fall 2010, at which time the university will begin accepting freshman and sophomore students. Outside of the classroom, A&M—Texarkana students take advantage of nine student organizations representing areas such as business, education, and history. These organizations encourage students to become more deeply involved with their chosen major, establish friendships among their classmates, and foster connections within the local Texarkana community through internship and networking opportunities.
