This Northwest Texas university comprises a vast 1,850 acres, but elegant Spanish Renaissance—style buildings and attractively landscaped grounds give the campus an old-fashioned collegial feel. About 29,000 undergraduates attend Texas Tech, and the university requires its freshmen to live on campus in one of 10 residence halls. Themed floors and halls make the experience more personal. Learning communities are also available, providing freshmen with greater access to faculty and students with shared academic goals.
Texas Tech offers students a choice of more than 150 bachelor’s, 100 master’s, and 50 doctoral programs. Faculty members are nationally known for their work in a wide variety of fields, including wind power, food safety, and water conservation. Students consistently win nationally competitive Goldwater Scholarships, and law school graduates often score among the highest in the state on the bar exam. Texas Tech is one of only three public universities in the state to house a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society.
More than 400 clubs and organizations provide enrichment outside of the classroom. Many Texas Tech students take part in the school’s Greek life and turn out for Tech’s Red Raiders football games, which usually guarantee Big 12 excitement. Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball teams attract devoted fans too.
Located in Lubbock, Texas Tech enjoys the area’s High Plains climate and four distinct seasons. The birthplace of Buddy Holly, Lubbock also claims many other beloved musicians, such as Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The Depot District, with its clubs and live music venues, hosts a steady stream of Tech students.
