Points of Distinction

Serving residents of South Texas, the University of Houston—Victoria is an upper-level undergraduate and graduate institution that attracts students seeking to complete their bachelor’s degree or pursue a master’s program. Students enroll in one of four schools: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education and Human Dev-elopment, and Nursing (the university’s newest). UHV’s graduate business program recently received national recognition for its family-friendly curriculum (accessible for students who are also parents). UHV also offers a study-abroad option with intensive and semester-long programs in London, Mexico, and Spain.

Approximately 1,600 undergraduates attend UHV, which is located in historic Victoria, the third chartered city in Texas. Small class sizes and faculty who are sensitive to their students’ schedules are two of the university’s biggest draws. UHV sponsors 11 student organizations, including United Campus Ministry, the Rosebud Film Society, and the Mexican American Student Organization. UHV also is home to the American Book Review, an internationally distributed literary journal; the Society for Critical Exchange, a scholarly society devoted to theory; and Fiction Collective Two, an independent alternative press. The university’s baseball and softball teams play in the NAIA, where the softball team in particular has done very well. Although UHV students often are busy enough outside the classroom, Victoria’s multiple parks and lakes offer nearby recreational opportunities.
