Chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is the oldest, continuously operating higher education institute in the state. Known for its nursing, business, and education programs, UMHB offers other academic options as well, such as a London semester during which students attend classes and live in the heart of the city while taking field trips to other European countries, including a nine-day visit to Scotland.
More than 2,500 undergraduates attend classes on the 230-acre Belton campus. Seven single-gender residence halls and three modern apartment complexes provide on-campus housing. The university does not support a Greek system, but it does have more than 40 student organizations—everything from the Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor Pageant to Puff Football. A member of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the university encourages faith-based activities and offers numerous student ministry groups and service opportunities. Student athletes compete on 12 teams at the NCAA Division III level and in the American Southwest Conference.
The university’s beautiful campus is serene, which describes much of Belton itself. Lake Belton’s pathways and caves offer nearby recreation, and neighboring Temple offers several restaurants and shops. UMHB’s location off I-35 makes it convenient for students to travel home periodically too.
