It’s hard to imagine that this bustling university of nearly 28,000 undergraduates was once housed on the second floor of a hardware store in downtown Denton. Today the University of North Texas is a well-regarded research institution and the flagship school of the University of North Texas System. And the campus continues to grow: a new Life Sciences Building will open in late 2009, and the cutting-edge Business Leadership Complex is under construction. Students choose from 99 bachelor’s degrees, and UNT is known for its top-notch music school and comprehensive visual arts program. The jazz studies program was the first of its kind, and the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band is known around the globe.

UNT offers on-campus housing in 14 residence halls, 2 of which are new. With 35 fraternities and sororities, Greek life tends to dominate at UNT. There are alternative extracurricular options, though, with more than 300 student clubs and organizations. Six men’s and 10 women’s athletic teams participate at the NCAA Division I-A level.

The North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison, cosponsored by UNT, is a staple of students’ spring calendars. The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest brings to campus acclaimed authors like N. Scott Momaday. Denton’s hip independent music scene offers students plenty of distraction, and they also head to the GreenHouse Restaurant for affordable burgers and drinks.
