Students at the University of Texas at Tyler enjoy a beautiful parklike campus with Harvey Lake at its center. More than 800 students live on the grounds in three residence facilities. Ornelas Hall, which houses most freshmen, is conveniently adjacent to the Patriot Center fitness and recreation facility.
More than 5,300 undergraduates attend UT Tyler, where nursing, education, and management are the top three of the university’s 39 bachelor’s programs. The newest undergraduate major is in the fast-growing field of construction management, and the university began offering its first doctoral program in nursing last fall.
The Greek system continues to grow at UT Tyler and represents a fraction of the university’s 76 student organizations. The Criminal Justice Student Association, the Colleges Against Cancer, and the Black Student Association are just a few of the other groups available. Student athletes play on 15 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference.
The expanded University Center houses a sports cafe and multiple food outlets in its three-story addition, providing more on-campus hangouts. In Tyler, the Down Under Pub and Grub is a student favorite. Some students also take advantage of department-sponsored field trips to Dallas and Fort Worth museums and other cultural spots. For the more adventurous, the university sponsors trips abroad.
