Nestled in the Piney Woods of East Texas, this small, private university supports a holistic education for more than 1,200 students. ETBU offers six bachelor’s degrees in more than 30 programs in seven schools. The school’s travel- study program promotes learning abroad, with students living and learning in countries such as China, Poland, Mexico, Turkey, England, and Greece. The Department of Languages and Literature is preparing to unveil a new writing program. This track, as well as a minor in writing, are unique for institutions the size of ETBU. Chapel attendance is required, as is on-campus living in single-gender dorms for underclassmen. Plenty of activities exist on campus and off. ETBU fields 10 athletic teams that compete at the NCAA Division III level, with tennis being added in 2010. Students also take advantage of the campus location in historic Marshall, a relatively small but vibrant city where local artists have studio space in a refurbished industrial building on the downtown square. Nearly all of the students bring cars to campus, and a lot of them take off on weekends. Lake O’ the Pines and Caddo Lake recreational areas are nearby, and Dallas is about 150 miles to the west.
