Route 84 Near Stanfield, Arizona

The grand scenery of the American Southwest draws hordes of tourists bent on capturing calendar-perfect panoramas on film. Klett, an Arizonan, emphasizes the impact humanity has had on nature—in this photo, a rotting tire burdens a saguaro. “We define the landscape,” Klett says, “and what we do will remain a very long time.”
