ON A HILLTOP NEAR THE INTERSECTION of U.S. highways 67 and 90, just east of Alpine, a plywood stagecoach and four horses seem to be hightailing it into town. “A local artist-character built the stagecoach,” says Rick Sohl, who owns the hilltop. “He used it in parades but was looking for a permanent place to display it. He showed up in my office one day and asked me if he could keep it on my land.” Against the setting sun, the illusion is especially convincing and has caused many travelers to wonder if they’ve been on the road a little too long. About a year ago, the artist himself hit the road too. Says Sohl: “I never saw him again, and I can’t remember his name. But wherever he is, he still owns the stagecoach.”
