Hey, all you Instagram users: Learn from an expert and you won’t have to edit those food pictures nearly as much.

At Smitty’s, in Lockhart.

Famed Texas magazine photographer Wyatt McSpadden is doing a road trip and day-long workshop in the barbecue capital of the world—Lockhart— next month. Participants (limited to ten people) will learn the master’s tricks of the trade in sessions at Smitty’s, Kreuz, and Black’s barbecue emporiums. McSpadden will discuss lighting (natural and set up), working on the fly, getting the right angle, cajoling taciturn pit masters into cracking a smile, making smoked meat look delicious, and more.

Included in the workshop are transportation from Austin to Lockhart and back, an autographed copy of McSpadden’s large-format book, Texas BBQ, and all the ‘cue a sensible person could eat. The group will depart from Austin on Thursday, February 7, at 8:15 a.m. and return at 4:30 p.m. Cost is $350 for the general public. The trip was instigated by the Austin/San Antonio chapters of the American Society of Media Photographers, whose members can register for $325. Sign up now.

McSpadden, who lives in Austin, has been documenting the Texas barbecue scene for more than twenty years. He has photographed it for Texas Monthly on numerous occasions, including the cover and most of the interior shots for our 2003 story on the top fifty barbecue joints in Texas (May 2003–this link is to the list; our older issues don’t include many pictures online).
