Beaumont

Cajun & Creole

(From January 2012)

The menu here has everything from gumbo and chicken strips to po'boys and burgers, but we recommend going straight for the fish tacos, a generous serving of the day's fish grilled and garnished with a cilantro-spiked slaw and scorching habenero sauce. Sides include mac and cheese, french fries, and a zesty corn salad that complements just about everything.

Houston

Seafood /
Cajun & Creole

(From December 2010)

First and last impressions count, and both were good at our weekend brunch at beautifully restored Brennan’s. Our starters of shrimp-and-okra gumbo and perfectly fried green tomatoes topped with lush crabmeat were both winners. Things got wobbly with an entrée of shrimp and grits, a case of overgrilled shrimp and too many ingredients vying for attention. Still, a great finale of precisely tart lemon meringue pie garnished with blueberry coulis and fresh blueberries left a sweet taste in our mouths. Bar.

Beaumont

Cajun & Creole

(From June 2011) This tiny, no-frills establishment in nearby Fannett may just have the best mud-bugs around. Squeeze into one of the picnic tables and place your order for several pounds at a time, some cooked up with their bright red shells crusted in blistering spices and some plain-Jane for the less ad-venturous. The succulent critters are served with a Cajun mayo dipping sauce or warm drawn butter, but when they’re in the prime of the season, they don’t need either—just pop the tender tails right out of their shells and directly into your mouth. BYOB.

Galveston

Cajun & Creole

(From April 2012)

This cozy gallery district spot does its name proud. Our seafood gumbo featured perfect shrimp, crab, and oysters in a brew as dark as the Brazos, while our friend’s Mumbo Gumbo had all that as well as chicken, sausage, and prime rib. A wedge salad made for crisp company. Beer & wine.

Marfa

Cajun & Creole

(From January 2012)

You could be forgiven for thinking Padre’s is just a funky music bar, since the first thing you see is a stage sprouting mike stands. But it is definitely worth dropping in for the bar food, which nods to both sides of the Sabine River with Cajun gumbos and Frito pie. We decided to sample the vegetarian curry, a really good combo of carrots, peppers, celery, and squash in coconut milk over rice. The menu called it moderately spicy—we shudder to contemplate very spicy.

Beaumont

Cajun & Creole

(From November 2011)

The fresh redo (after a kitchen fire last year) looks good on the place, and we’re happy to find the fare just as tasty as it always was. We sing the praises of the fried shrimp, but we know many who crave the cornmeal-crusted catfish filets, their little kick of spice pairing well with the creamy house-made tartar sauce. A new addition to the menu is the sweet potato fries, which we have discovered are a great side for just about everything here. BYOB.
