Amarillo

American /
Diner

(From June 2009) Tucked in the corner of a parking lot off Route 66 is a downtown diner where most customers are on a first-name basis with the staff. For early eaters, the French toast—sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a side of crisp bacon and a steaming cup of coffee—is a good way to start the day. Stop in around lunchtime and you might be lucky enough to get the enchilada platter or the homemade chicken and rice soup, with tender meat, fresh carrots, and celery, all seasoned to perfection.

Dallas

Diner

(From November 2008) The eclectic 24/7 diner now has a branch on Lemmon, and thankfully, nearly everything has carried over. (Well, there are a few upgrades, including larger tables and a patio.) Late-night noshers will be pleased to find an array of salads, sandwiches, and vegetarian options, many of a decidedly Tex-Mex bent. And, of course, the ubiquitous laptop crowd will be partaking in free Wi-Fi and bottomless mugs from Buzzbrews’ signature coffee bar.

Tyler

Diner

(From November 2008) This fifties-style spot offers a fast, fresh alternative to drive-through food. Breakfast is served all day, and there’s plenty of lunch and dinner fare, like burgers and salads, grilled salmon and chicken-fried steak. We had a fluffy, cheesy omelet overflowing with fresh spinach and mushrooms. The French toast was so good we ordered another plate.

Amarillo

Diner /
Sandwiches

(From December 2008) Complete with model train traveling the room, this lunch and dinner spot is the best for old-fashioned comfort food, like chicken-fried chicken and Frito pie. Sandwiches include burgers, po’boys, and the decid-edly un-old-fashioned Texas Egg Roll: a hoagie bun stuffed with sliced ribeye, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and Swiss, then battered and fried.

Lubbock

Diner

(From August 2008) Golfers and non-golfers alike enjoy this casual, friendly diner at the Texas Tech Rawls Golf Course. Relax on the patio while you chow down on thick burgers and sandwiches, popcorn shrimp, or chicken-fried steaks. The creative salads are topflight; the Ultimate Grilled Tuna Steak Salad mixes slightly rare yellowfin with greens, feta cheese, walnuts, and a mild garlic aioli, while the Yucatan Salad has grilled chicken, pineapple, mandarin oranges, crisp tortilla strips, and Dijon-lime dressing. Beer.

Dallas

Diner

(From November 2009) Open since 1972, this Dallas institution gets it right, and John himself has barely changed in all these years. This newer location (actually, we loved the funkiness of the old place), with its dark red comfy booths and utilitarian decor, was full of police officers, senior citizens, and young families when we arrived at ten in the morning. We settled down to a generous vegetable-cheese omelet with grits and toast (though we’ll admit, sheepishly, to occasionally breakfasting on the fabulous, delicately tart lemon meringue pie).

Mineola

Diner

(From December 2009) We stumbled on this unique lunch spot owned and operated by Debbie Davis—restaurateur, baseball mom, foodie, and local TV celebrity—during a leisurely morning of shopping for antiques. We left enamored of the fluffy omelet, delicious Belgian waffles, and yogurt-fruit parfait, a delightful ending to a treasure hunt full of surprises. By the way, Davis and her husband, Ken, also own East Texas Burger Co.

Kerrville

Diner

(From June 2008) Step back in time and remember when life seemed so easy. At lunch we savored every bite of our delicious chicken and dumplings (dare we say they were better than our grandmother’s?). There’s a wide variety of soups, sandwiches, and salads, as well as soda fountain drinks. The dinner menu includes lamb, wild game, seafood, veal, and beef. We recommend the spinach shrimp enchiladas and the crab cakes. Bar.

Galveston

Diner

(From June 2008) Set between UTMB’s main campus and its Primary Care Pavilion, this spotless diner serves up classic comfort food, both American and Tex-Mex. Our towering club sandwich on toasted bread paired turkey and crisp bacon, and sprightly red bell peppers livened up our crunchy-fresh grilled-chicken salad.
