McKinney

Tapas

(From January 2012)

This great little tapas spot is nestled in a cool restored house with a relaxing patio. We like the flavorful gambas al ajillo (tiger shrimp sautéed in a lemon, butter, and garlic sauce) and the wood-fired pinchos morunos (marinated skewers of beef with a mango-serrano coulis). For dessert the Tarta de Santiago, a Galician almond tart with vanilla cream and toasted almonds, is top-notch. Bar.

Houston

Tapas

(From March 2012)

Handsome Convivio blends right in in the Washington Avenue area, with its curved surfaces, glass, and soft lighting. And its Spanish dishes are starting to draw crowds. Our foursome got lucky on our first visit, with a fine pizzetta topped with goat cheese, serrano ham, and romesco sauce; a meat paella for four that was loaded with tender chorizo; perfectly cooked scallops with a saffron crème fraiche; and a trio of Kobe beef sliders. On a second visit, disappointment reared its ugly head in the form of stodgy mashed-potato-and-shrimp croquettes and stringy, barely cooked crabcakes. Brace yourself for some noise. Bar.

Laredo

Tapas

(From March 2012)

Danny’s restaurants are the bedrock of cheap and cheerful, and this location is a personal favorite. Ladle up a huge bowl of caldo de res, brimming with beef, cabbage, and potatoes. Spritz liberally with lime juice and side with heaps of arroz your tía would envy. Finally, butter a flour tortilla, dig in, and experience a budget-savvy epiphany. Daily enchilada specials are the stuff your Outlook calendar must make space for; we’ll take the verdes with chicken and return for the mole with queso blanco. Bar.

Dallas

Tapas /
New American

(From November 2011)

Located inside the NYLO hotel and flowing out onto a romantic courtyard complete with pool and fireplace, this contemporary restaurant attracts locals on the weekend and the business crowd during the week. The Social Plates are real pleasers, like the succulent barbecue shrimp tacos, the pulled pork sliders, and the flatbread topped with arugula, ricotta, and lobster. Heartier appetites should try the Moroccan-style roasted pork chop with caramelized apple, couscous, and a red wine demi. Creative cocktails and an extensive wine list cover the drinks department. Bar.
