Tearoom /
Deli

(From April 2009) Teri and Zee Zepeda, proprietors of the popular Nuevo Café, have chosen for their encore this spare but attractive tearoom cum sandwich shop, where the approach to the standard lunchtime menu is refreshingly novel. Take the 517 BLT: The bread is fresh-baked brioche, the tomatoes green and fried, and the bacon cured in sweet apple cider. We like to start with a cup of the outstanding roasted-poblano soup, a welcome carryover from the menu at Nuevo. Finding 517 is an adventure, but it’s worth the effort; it’s hidden upstairs and behind Sister Sue’s boutique and can be entered via stairs or elevator in the shop or by its own rustic stairway from the rear parking lot. 517 Everhart Rd (361-991-7828). Lunch Tue–Sat 11–3. Closed Sun & Mon.

Tearoom /
Eclectic

(From December 2009) Aging flower children will find comfortable familiarity at the Tango Tea Room, housed in the Yin Yang Fandango shop cum alternative culture center. That is, if they don’t mind the company of banker types, who come for the excellent food and hospitality offered by proprietors John and Irene Jaan. The recently refreshed menu is an eclectic collection of exotic teas, mostly vegan cuisine, and beautiful American-style cakes and pies. Our favorite menu item, and one of the most popular, is a shredded chicken salad with sun-dried tomatoes served on a fresh croissant with a side of piquant salsa and corn chips. We also like the roasted vegetable sandwich (tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, artichoke hearts, and mushrooms). We broke diet vows for a slice of creamy Mexican chocolate cheesecake improved with a subtle blend of chile peppers, cinnamon, and secret south-of-the-border spices.
