Tex-Mex

(From June 2011)

The words on the menu may seem familiar, but don’t expect Tex-Mex at this recently opened West 7th spot. Guacamole comes made to order with chopped onions and roasted garlic and accompanied with house-made corn tortillas and way-above-average crispy tostados. Tacos al pastor sport the same soft tortillas filled with pork, cilantro, and grilled pine-apple, while the barbacoa enchiladas feature slow-cooked, Negra Modelo–marinated brisket. Bar.

Tex-Mex

(From July 2011)

The perfect way to beat Texas’s late afternoon and evening heat is to dine alfresco at one of Joe T.’s lovely shady patios, even better if it has a splashing fountain. Cold cervezas and slushy margaritas quell the heat of salsa and chips, which most customers overindulge in while awaiting their fajita platters and cheese enchilada dinners. Bar.

Eclectic /
Tex-Mex

(From February 2011) Possibly the most popular, distinctive menu in town melds comfort food with thoughtful preparation. We’re mad for the lightly pan-fried crab and salmon cake, a loose-textured construction boosted with chopped herbs and onion, perfect for dredging through the pleasantly hot Creole mustard. Wood-grilled lamb chops take on a hint of Latin flavor with a spicy chorizo demi, softened by polenta creamy with jack cheese and smoky with roasted poblano. Even side dishes deserve special attention, particularly when they’re as distinctive as the bacon-riddled mustard greens and the mascarpone whipped potatoes. Our favorite sweet is the Valrhona chocolate cup with a chocolate-caramel-pecan mousse. An enclosed brick patio easily accommodates overflow crowds. Bar.

Tex-Mex

(From May 2011) A remodel of the former Snookie’s has dispelled the barn-like feel, and waiters seem eager to guide diners through Felipe Armenta’s varied menu, which skews toward beef and Tex-Mex, with a few surprises thrown in. Mexico City Enchiladas, for instance, come stuffed with roasted chicken and jack cheese, and Baja Fish Tacos are also a bit of a departure: a hefty piece of blackened fish sits atop five soft corn tortillas with chipotle sauce, cilantro, tomatoes, and pickled red onions. Bar.
