(From May 2011) With a party in the bar, the noise was deafening, but the fiesta spirit proved contagious as we sipped and supped with delight. Lulled by mescal margaritas, we enjoyed a Caribbean-style tuna ceviche with mango and avocado. Spirits properly soothed, we then feasted on fantastic slow-roasted lamb served with tortillas and trimmings like onions, cilantro, and avocado. And we couldn’t resist our favorite chiles rellenos, the poblanos overstuffed with roasted chicken. This lovely hacienda holds restorative powers. Bar.

(From January 2011) We’d return for the ambience. The hacienda-style space is nicely appointed, but the real treasure is outside, where you’ll find an expansive patio, a meandering brook and waterfalls, and portable a/c units. Alas, the food is not as impressive. A paper-thin beef filet with onions and poblanos was particularly bland, but we livened it up with spoonfuls of salsa. We had better luck with the seafood: sautéed mahi-mahi, tropically dressed with mango and habanero sauce, and a seared snapper with a sprightly Veracruz sauce. Bar

(From June 2011) What’s not to like about a kitchen that names its enchiladas for Refugio, Donna, Crystal City, and other bright lights of the Rio Grande Valley? Colorful oilcloth table coverings further warm our hearts, but authentic both-sides-of-the-border dishes are the real draw at this popular spot on Westheimer. You can’t do better than hefty cheese or beef enchiladas (with the best chile gravy in town), but the Mexican-style chicken enchiladas with salsa verde and a lighter calabacita and corn version with queso and cream sauce both run close seconds.
