Seafood

(From June 2012)

Kris and Lisa Amundsen have made a “Build it and they will come” move from the heart of Port A action to an attractive new spot in the
leisure-home community of Cinnamon Shore (hint: enter at the more northerly of the two entrances). We agreed the food and service ranged from very good to truly remarkable. We exhausted our vocabulary praising our meal, from a hearty lobster soup with a hint of curry smoothed by coconut milk and cilantro to the outstanding Snapper Capri, a fresh filet pan-sautéed with a light caper-tomato cream sauce and complemented by almost creamy fried polenta and grilled asparagus. Not as notable but still excellent were the mixed seafood platter (a snapper filet and three large shrimp, all pan-fried in a thin cornmeal batter) and the house salad (organic mixed greens with sliced pears, crumbled Gorgonzola, and walnuts). The eclectic menu includes several pizzas and pastas for less fancy (and less expensive) choices. Bar.

We were first very unpleasantly surprised how difficult it was to find a descent place to eat at Padre Island. But when we found Lisabella's we were amazed at the quality of the food and the beauty of the place. If I ever go back to Padre Island this is one place I will definitely try again. Don't forget your wine though!

Sushi /
Seafood

(From May 2012)

Here we confidently choose from an array of fresh, well-prepared seafood (with sides that get as much attention in the kitchen as the entrees), and we have yet to be disappointed. Scallops beurre noir (sautéed in browned garlic butter) served over toast points started the meal well, followed by a crisp, cold Ceasar salad and mixed baby greens with roasted pecans and crumbled Roquefort. Entrees of cornmeal-crusted flounder and grilled black drum, both served with a medley of tender vegetables, fulfilled our high expectations. Choose a seat in the bustling main dining room, the quieter room upstairs, or the covered outside deck over the water. Service is helpful and friendly but not intrusive. Bar.

Pelican and Venetian Hot Plate are good. But my favorite place in Port A. is La Playa Mexican Grille. Be prepared for a wait. Relax and enjoy chatting with the other waitees in La Playa's front patio area and salivating as people exit and the open door wafts savory garlic. The food is a homestyle mix of grilled seafood and trad Mex dishes. All of it, from-scratch delicious.

Italian /
Seafood

(From June 2011)

This institution makes a credible claim (amid strong competition) for providing the best dining experience in Port Aransas. Our server guided us to an appetizer we could have made a meal off of: a loaf of baked po-lenta with a light, fresh tomato-and-onion sauce and chunks of creamy Gorgonzola. Entrées were flawless: grilled mahimahi with a green onion pesto and pan-fried crab cakes—crunchy on the outside, moist and succulent within. Both were accompanied by properly grilled asparagus and an excellent carrot-flecked risotto. Altogether a satisfying justification for a round-trip to “the Port.” Beer & wine.
