(From November 2011) Precise rows of apple trees angle away from the highway, inviting you into a scene straight from Robert Frost. Inside the A-frame is nothing fancy, just mismatched tables and a lunch buffet with items you would enjoy at a homey Sunday dinner. Hearty chunks of white meat and moist dumplings in a savory broth will send you back for seconds of the chicken and dumplings. The beef stew and cornbread are equally filling. The tangy dressing on the pea salad made it our surprising favorite. Finish with a flaky apple turnover or apple puff. Don’t forget a jar of Dutch apple preserves or the apple festival in September.

(From January 2011) Damien Watel (whose flagship Bistro Vatel is across the street) owns this simple but comforting French bakery and bistro run by his mother, Lucile. Since opening a little more than a year ago, the spot has nurtured a fine audience of regulars for coffee and croissants, not to mention the lunchtime quiches (the oniony lorraine is nicely authentic), sprightly salads, and delicious dessert pastries. Don’t miss the pineapple mousse—unless you’re walking out with a chocolate éclair. Dinner service is expected to start soon; stay tuned. Beer & wine.

(From May 2011) Handmade breads and pastries have moved into the TCU neighborhood. Concentrating on artisanal loaves of French, German, and Italian provenance, the bakery adheres to a production schedule, making basics like ba-guettes and sourdough daily and specialty breads (pain au fromage, brioche, etc.) on certain days of the week. Be sure to try one of the sandwiches too, like ham and Gruyère or goat cheese with black olive tapenade and roasted tomato. They make for a perfect picnic, particularly when you add a few freshly baked cookies. The lunch counter is laden with cakes, scones, and muffins just begging to follow you home.

(From June 2011) Tucked inside a teensy storefront, all white and glistening, is the heart of Lubbock’s trendiest shopping center. Gourmet cupcakes, nestled in beribboned boxes, come in a multitude of flavors, like Signature Chocolate (a sinful mix of chocolate chips and dark chocolate cake) and Lemon Blueberry (a perfect blend of sweet and tangy). Our favorite is the Diner (old-fashioned yellow cake with chocolate buttercream frosting). Or maybe the Apricot Amaretto. No, the Bridal White. No, Butterscotch! The options are endless.

(From March 2012) Beautiful cookies, muffins, and candy-colored macarons greet you in this small, sweet-smelling bakery. CC’s is only a year old and gaining in popularity every day. We go for cupcakes, our favorite being the decadent red velvet with its sweet cream cheese frosting. The kiwi is an unexpected treat, a perfect balance of sweet and tart. The selection changes daily and seasonally, and custom orders are accepted.

(From February 2012) Best known for its cakes (think Italian cream, German chocolate, strawberry), this mid-island lunch spot wins raves for its muffalettas and Italian beef sandwiches. We opted for a lighter favorite, a tomato stuffed with shrimp salad, the better to enjoy a slice of Crack Pie, an addictive concoction of heavy cream, eggs, and brown sugar.

(From June 2011) New York’s Culinary Institute of America has opened a branch at the Pearl Brewery, along with this gleaming over-the-counter cafe. Breakfast offers flaky croissants, eggy brioche, and lemon-blueberry muffins, while at lunch, soup (like a milky corn-and-poblano-chile) and sandwiches (the thick muffaletta can serve two) keep visitors happy. Best bet for dessert? Probably the hemispherical chocolate XS Cake, combining flourless chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, and mir-rorlike black chocolate frosting.

(From December 2010) Tempting Brownsville with the sweet smell of frosting since 1996, Cristy’s has cakes galore, from basic chocolate and vanilla to custom confections for all kinds of occasions—weddings, quinceañeras, birthdays (the children’s cakes are particularly fun). Our two-layer yellow cake, topped with multicolored flowers, was moist and incredibly light, with a faint buttery taste and a treasure trove of gooey Mexican cajeta hidden inside.

(From March 2012) What could be more enjoyable than the journey to Edom along peaceful country roads on a winter day? Lunch at Edom bakery is the gold at the end of the rainbow. Although the Reubenesque is our favorite (corned beef, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island), recommendations from loyalists prompted us to try the outstanding chicken salad (made special by smoked-in-house chicken and mango salsa) and the burger, which approached perfection with a fresh bun, juicy beef, and locally grown vegetables. (From January 2012) This congenial venue has had a changing of the guard. Hester and Jason Rodriquez, proprietors of the esteemed Hester’s at Six Points, have taken over operations of the former Dobson Café site, bringing with them their most popular breakfast and lunch items. We enjoyed the Devonshire quiche, deliciously creamy, with spinach, ricotta, Swiss cheese, and tomato, and the satisfying Swinney Switch salad with black beans, roasted turkey, and corn salsa. As we lingered to watch the tugboats at work, we savored the excellent coffee and a coconut cupcake topped with a glorious crown of meringue. Bar.
