Sandwiches /
American

(From May 2011) With its exposed brick walls and towering, glass-paned doors, this cheery sandwich shop exudes the essence of the Strand Historic District. The Greek salad, tossed with a creamy, herby dressing, made an ample lunch, as did our friend’s Third Coast Reuben, with turkey pastrami and Swiss cheese piled high with house-made coleslaw. A farmers market of local produce makes an appearance on Sundays.

(From March 2011) Although prescriptions are a thing of the past here, this historic landmark offers shakes, sundaes, and even egg creams at a U-shaped counter straight out of the twenties. Lunch draws locals hankering for juicy cheeseburgers, tarragon chicken salad studded with sliced almonds, and hearty tomato basil soup enriched with chunks of bacon and Latvian sourdough rye. Beer & wine.

I can’t rank Star Drug high enough. Every trip to Galveston has to include at least one meal here. Both the atmosphere and the food are outstanding.

(From July 2011)

Regulars queue up to order fresh salads and sandwiches, plus daily-changing wraps and quesadillas advertised on the blackboard. Our personal faves are the Napa salad (greens and grilled chicken spiked with Granny Smith apples and walnuts) and the spinach pasta (a bowl of bow ties tossed with fresh spinach, tomatoes, and blue cheese). The desserts are so popular that the owners have opened a bakery, Patty Cakes, across the street. Beer and wine.

This is the only place other than Star Drug that rates a visit on every one of our twice annual trips to Galveston. There is not a flaw one on the menu.

(From March 2011) Chef Urs Schmid does wonders with his signature shrimp dejonghe, but this time we opted for blackened snapper, timed to the minute, and toothsome lump crab in fresh lemon butter. A salad of red and yellow beefsteak tomatoes made a fine start. The above-the-treetops view and courtly service make this a special-occasion fave. Bar.
