(From December 2008) Think tailgate parties, backyard barbecues, and potlucks, where your best friends bring their favorite dishes, lovingly prepared to impress and please. Now, spiff things up a little and bring them on into the house. It must have been local heroes’ day when we visited, as the place was overflowing with firemen and peace officers, which also brings to mind tailgate parties and . . . but we digress. The locals rave about the burgers, but we chose the chicken patty melt: a juicy marinated chicken breast and grilled onions, served on toast. The plain and simple chocolate pie was to die for. Beer & wine.

Home Cooking

(From April 2009) If we were a bit put off by the shacklike exterior, we were so taken with the delicious home-style fare that we soon forgot our initial reaction. The place was SRO at 11:15 on a weekday morning, with locals perched on bar stools and crowded around tables or simply eating from takeout cartons. The waitresses seem well aware they’re serving something special, as they plunk down your food—thick chicken breasts with mushroom sauce, mac and cheese made with real cream and lots of butter, ultrafresh corn on the cob—with little fanfare. This hip hometown diner is a window into Kilgore culture.

Ruth says:
Oh my goodness! It’s a "joint" in every sense of the word, but the food is outstanding! Every traveler loves to come across a place like this, delicious, cheap and welcoming. Word to the wise, go early or be prepared to stand in line - it’s always busy!

Barbecue

(From June 2008) Celebrity customers have included: Robert Duvall, George H.W. Bush, and Larry Hagman.
The prettiest ribs in the region come steaming out of the Country Tavern’s enormously efficient kitchen, and the brisket’s good too. A dark-red sauce gives the hickory-smoked meats a sweet East Texas edge. The big, bustling place is like a cave tarted up with neon, but the waitresses have a girl-next-door quality, and the mood is family-friendly.
