French /
New American

(From September 2009) Bernard Tronche is closing in on 25 years of serving country French food to a loyal following. The tiny cottage fills quickly and rather noisily while experienced servers circulate and greet the regulars. Choose from the small menu or from the blackboards on easels. We opted for a seafood feast with appetizers of butter-tender sea scallops (with sautéed fennel) and chilled lemon mousseline with crabmeat and avocado and entrées of Pacific escolar (with lemon butter and ca-pers) and a red snapper piperade. Bar.

New American /
Mediterranean

(From December 2009) Informal enough to be a neighborhood spot but classed up with French tableware and pastel linens, Louise Lamensdorf’s charming venue is just the right home for her ever-changing menu. On a recent visit we had a delicious carrot-cumin soup, followed by savory pan-seared scallops served with savoy cabbage, fingerling potatoes, and a rich caviar beurre blanc. Buttermilk chocolate cake went per-fectly with the house-made cinnamon ice cream. Bar.

New American

(From November 2009) Twenty years for any restaurant is amazing, and it’s been a pleasure to watch David Rotman’s Ridglea spot evolve. Replacing the floor-to-ceiling fabric of years past are half walls topped with glass blocks. Also, “demi plates” are now offered. Being partial to the Southwestern menu items, we were more than content with the pork tenderloin enchiladas served with onion and corn relish. And we raved about the basil-infused mashed potatoes accompanying grilled Atlantic salmon slathered with lemon hollandaise. Happy birthday, Cafe Aspen. Bar.

$—$$

New American

(From July 2008) The lunch crowds are thick at this charming redo of a former grocery. We grabbed the last table and enjoyed a glass of wine while studying the offerings. Chicken-fried steak and King Ranch casserole share the menu with some spectacular salads and burgers; ours, the Lili Burger, was hand-pressed beef on a toasted bun with spicy Gorgonzola sauce, tomato, and crumbles of bacon. A pile of waffle fries completed the yummy presentation but were disappointingly tough. Desserts (like an apple pie your mother only dreamed of baking) are made in-house daily. Beer & wine.
