San Antonio

German /
South American

(From June 2011) Boehler’s, with roots going back 120 years into San Antonio’s Germanic past, moved into these tilting dining rooms almost as soon as Liberty Bar moved out. The country-rustic dining rooms remain un-changed, and dishes reflect the Boehler family’s Teutonic heritage, but expect some Southern Americana as well. We had a long-simmered pot roast and a moist and unexpectedly peppery filet of salmon with ginger sauce. The crab cake, similarly peppery, came with a harmoni-ous mango sauce. Informal and cheery, Boehler’s is a nice addition to the area. Bar.

Burnet

South American

(From June 2011) Lot Count on good vibes at the Feed Lot, with its down-home cooking, county-fair decor, and friendly staff. We had, as you might have predicted, a chicken-fried steak with all the sides and fried catfish with pups (that’s hushpuppies to you), all of which was mighty fine. Burgers are good too. Satisfy your sweet tooth with the creamy Key lime pie.

$$-$$$

Houston

South American

(From January 2012)

Convenient for a bite before or after downtown performances, this Bayou Place restaurant is worthy of an evening on its own. The ambience is contemporary (sleek stainless steel and wood surfaces), the service personal, and the menu South American. Memorable tastes include watermelon gazpacho with a jalapeño granita, crab cakes with a passion fruit beurre blanc, and an open-faced lobster tamale. Bar.

San Antonio

South American

(From June 2011) It’s worth a visit just to sample the salad bar, which has about fifty fresh ingredients—tomatoes, asparagus, cheeses, prosciutto, spinach, shrimp, tabouleh, and on and on. But this is another Brazil-ian churrascaria, the third to put down roots here, and the meat’s the thing. Waiters (well, they call them gauchos) prowl the floor bran-dishing swords of beef, lamb, chicken, pork, and sausage; the many meats include perhaps the tenderest bacon-wrapped filet we have had anywhere, succulent lamb chops, and a very tasty Brazilian sausage. Splashy, brightly lit, a bit dressy, Texas de Brazil is an en-ergetic addition to downtown and a short walk from the Majestic Theater. Bar.
