Greek

(From March 2009) This popular watering hole for the local Greek community also draws a cross section of locals with its family-friendly atmosphere and impressive range of dishes. We split an order of feather-light moussaka and the Zeus sampler: tender dolmas, assertive feta, kalamata olives, hummus, melitzana (eggplant dip), and two other dips that are harder to find (at least in Galveston), skordalia (a blend of garlic, lemon, bread, and olive oil) and tzatziki (yogurt, sour cream, garlic, and cucumber). Beer & wine.

Greek

(From November 2009) With the long-gone Golden Greek and Seawall Café, the Kriticos family introduced Galveston to home-style Greek food. Now the current generation has introduced the Island to Greek chic in the form of modern, minimalist decor and glass walls overlooking the harbor. Somehow, the contemporary atmosphere perfectly sets off familiar classics like moussaka, avgolemono soup, and a cornucopia of appe-tizers (keftedes, calamari, dolmas), as well as succulent lamb and steak and straight-ahead seafood. We found the generous avocado Greek salad, topped with feta and olives and sliced gyro meat, the perfect midday meal. Live music on weekends. Bar.

Mediterranean /
Greek

(From October 2008) We like this congenial corner bistro in the heart of the Strand, where the kitchen stays busy serving up reliable classics like baba ganouj, tabouleh, spanakopita, and moussaka. Our companion pronounced the gyros nicely seasoned, while we applauded a recent addition: shish tawook, a juicy, lemon-bathed chicken breast on a bed of spinach. Beer & wine.
