(From July 2011) The move a few shops east now affords a little more legroom and the option to dine outdoors, but the crowds and chaos remain. Given the high quality of the house-made soups, salads, and sandwiches here, you’ll never dine alone. Our half of an orange-honey-cranberry chicken salad sandwich arrived with a side of potato salad and left room for a bakery item; we had trouble choosing from the pretty cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and more on display, all made fresh daily.

(From February 2011) This bakery is renowned for its Black Forest cake, not to mention its cookies and wide array of pastries. Those who plan ahead can work in a breakfast or lunch in the adjoining (rather under-decorated) dining room to coincide with their bakery pick-up. Our Reuben sandwiches (with two sides and a pickle spear) were more than adequate in size (heaven only knows how big the extra-large Reuben is). But the potato salad, alas, was heavy on the mustard and raw onion, the sauerkraut lacked the tang of authentic Bavarian style, and the bland corned beef was definitely for American tastes.

(From May 2011) Handmade breads and pastries have moved into the TCU neighborhood. Concentrating on artisanal loaves of French, German, and Italian provenance, the bakery adheres to a production schedule, making basics like ba-guettes and sourdough daily and specialty breads (pain au fromage, brioche, etc.) on certain days of the week. Be sure to try one of the sandwiches too, like ham and Gruyère or goat cheese with black olive tapenade and roasted tomato. They make for a perfect picnic, particularly when you add a few freshly baked cookies. The lunch counter is laden with cakes, scones, and muffins just begging to follow you home.
