(From June 2008) The folks behind the esteemed landscape design firm Thompson & Hanson have turned their attention to food, creating an oasis in a bustling corner of Houston that makes a perfect escape from a busy day of work or shopping. Nestled up to the garden store, the little restaurant’s sunlit tables, both indoors and out, are filled with ladies who lunch and its offerings are brimming with fresh-from-the-garden herbs. We sipped cool lemonade with mint before deciding on a satisfying turkey and avocado club and a pasta dish loaded with fresh pesto. Homemade soups and other light fare, as well as breakfast, are also served.

(From July 2008) Kosher has come to downtown Houston. David “Ziggy” Gruber’s latest venture in the Houston Center food court has corporate types lining up to brown-bag Hebrew National brand hot dogs, bagels, Reubens, knishes, and Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray sodas back to their cubicles (or devour at a nearby table). Don’t overlook the daily soup specials; give special consideration to Zig’s curative chicken noodle. Top it all off with cheesecake or a chocolate babka.

(From August 2008) Zoës’ sleek lines, bright colors, and friendly service, as well as its range of salads and sandwiches, bring to mind a European fast-food restaurant. Our fresh tuna salad could have served two, especially as we were also sampling nicely done pasta salad, coleslaw, and potato salad. Our grilled, boneless chicken breast came with orzo pilaf, a light yet satisfying entrée.
