Mexican

(From May 2012)

Though the beautifully presented, expansive Sunday brunch has to be one of our favorites in town, we recently opted for a quiet dinner with friends in this lovely old building. Our favorite salad proved to be greens studded with avocado, mango, blue cheese, and pumpkin seeds. We enjoyed both the taquito de langosta, a succulent little lobster number, and the taquitos de huachinango, the tortillas filled with wood-grilled snapper and chipotle mayonnaise. Next time we’ll opt for the filet over the thin skirt steak. Bar.

Mexican

(From January 2011)

We’d return for the ambience. The hacienda-style space is nicely appointed, but the real treasure is outside, where you’ll find an expansive patio, a meandering brook and waterfalls, and portable a/c units. Alas, the food is not as impressive. A paper-thin beef filet with onions and poblanos was particularly bland, but we livened it up with spoonfuls of salsa. We had better luck with the seafood: sautéed mahi-mahi, tropically dressed with mango and habanero sauce, and a seared snapper with a sprightly Veracruz sauce. Bar

Mexican

(From June 2011) What’s not to like about a kitchen that names its enchiladas for Refugio, Donna, Crystal City, and other bright lights of the Rio Grande Valley? Colorful oilcloth table coverings further warm our hearts, but authentic both-sides-of-the-border dishes are the real draw at this popular spot on Westheimer. You can’t do better than hefty cheese or beef enchiladas (with the best chile gravy in town), but the Mexican-style chicken enchiladas with salsa verde and a lighter calabacita and corn version with queso and cream sauce both run close seconds. Bar.
