(From April 2009) The decor is pretty and girly. The food is just as the name suggests: heavenly. Corn chowder, thick and creamy, warmed us up on a cold day. We followed it with a trio of goodies that left us quite satisfied: chicken salad with dried cranberries and pecans, old-fashioned broccoli salad with raisins (a childhood favorite of ours), and cold pasta salad. A German chocolate cupcake four inches high and wrapped in dark brown butcher paper (we couldn’t resist the packaging) had the added bonus of being moist and not too sweet.

(From March 2009) Honky-tonk music, mounted bison heads, dish-towel napkins, old photos of cowpokes out on the trail . . . you get the picture. A must-try is the fried green tomato lollipop; it looks just like it sounds and tastes ambrosial when paired with the accompanying three-cheese dipping sauce. Braised beef sliders were too sweet for our taste, but we happily crunched on “ranch cigars”: brisket and cheddar cheese rolled in flour tortillas and flash-fried. BYOB.

(From October 2009) Without a doubt, this is the most charming restaurant patio in Dallas. If you find yourself there, you might consider sitting down to Huevos del Sol: two eggs over easy on two corn tortillas with strategic puddles of grits, pintos, and chili to mix in as desired. But another fine choice might be a stack of sweet potato pancakes. Chicken and dumplings, the Sunday lunch special, are “just like Grandma used to make”; we’ll be back to see if they equal our granny’s.

(From April 2009) Weekends are crowded at this Lakewood favorite, but a leisurely lunch can be had during the week. Law books line the walls of the cozy space, so you can get in a little research while you dine on nutty mushroom soup, piquant lemon chicken salad, and huge homemade cookies. By night this small restaurant transforms itself into Papou’s Greek Kitchen and Taverna.

(From November 2008) When you tire of nouvelle or exotic, join the crowd of senior citizens, police officers, and families and chow down on honest-to-God comfort food. We had a blissful breakfast of thick, chewy bacon crisscrossed over eggs (cooked exactly as ordered) and a side of fluffy, seven-inch pancakes that practically levitated off the plate. (One small complaint: Why serve butter pecan maple syrup when the plain stuff is perfectly great!) Friendliest service in town.

The greatest! What ever you order you will not be disapointed. Get there early for lunch, by 11:30 or you will stand in line. Then you will be greeted by a sassy host and if you are lucky you might even be served by Mama! The daily lunch specials are all great. Meatloaf is my favoriate.

(From August 2009) This is a classic Dallas place to grab a burger after work, watch the game, and drink a beer, and it’s also great for families. The laid-back Greenville Avenue original opened in 1978; since then more locations have sprouted around Dallas. But what remains the same is the quality of that big, mouthwatering burger, particularly the cheesy-tangy Green Chile Swissburger piled high with crisp shredded lettuce and fat tomato slices. And while it’s tough to beat the great fries, you’d be crazy not to order the cheddar fries at a place that’s bold enough to claim it invented them.

(From April 2009) Reza Anvarian, a former Golden Glove middleweight champion with a mean left jab (hence the name), has opened up this small eatery to bring his style of healthy eating to the masses. An herb vinaigrette glazes the Power Salad: baby spinach, hearts of palm, olives, artichokes, mushrooms, feta, red onion, and a sprinkling of pumpkin seeds. Another mighty filling choice is the Green Gobbler (you gotta love the name), a whole-grain-bread sandwich of oven-roasted turkey, avocado, spinach, tomato, hummus, and Swiss cheese. A Nutty-Monkey smoothie of banana and organic peanut butter is as good as any dessert.

(From September 2008) This cheery cottage discourages morning grumpiness. Freshly squeezed orange juice and our own personal carafe of coffee got us started right. And the Rich Uncle—a giant croissant topped with scrambled eggs, diced chicken, broccoli, mushrooms, cream cheese, and hollandaise—along with roasted potatoes and fresh fruit, left us tanked up until late afternoon.

(From January 2009) In the burbs (think Addison), mealtime happiness equals good healthy food and a mini-playground draped in fragrant wisteria. We couldn’t begin to finish our “square meal”: enormous servings of organic black beans, brown rice, and nicely grilled squashes, peppers, and onions. Or a fine grilled salmon filet, for that matter. We astonished ourselves, though, by eating every morsel of a decadent chocolate torte on a macadamia crust prettily “iced” with strawberries. Beer & wine.

(From May 2009) The name hasn’t changed in all these years, and ceramic mermaids still adorn the walls of this classic lunch and early-dinner spot at Neiman’s in NorthPark. Even better, some of our old favorites are still on the menu, like the Duke of Windsor sandwich: grilled egg bread piled with roasted turkey, gooey cheddar cheese, and a small ring of pineapple. It’s all slathered with chutney and served with addictive house-made garlicky potato chips and tiny scoops of savory black-eyed-pea-and-corn relish. Beer & wine.
