(From February 2009) While our companions ordered burgers piled high with cheese and onions and flanked by hand-cut waffle fries, we settled in to savor a sandwich of juicy grilled ribeye steak. With the sun glinting off the Gulf, we could almost imagine ourselves on vacation. Beer & wine.

(From September 2009) Home to Galveston’s first integrated lunch counter, this landmark draws locals for its omelets and French toast, as well as its banana splits, egg creams, malts, and brown cows. But we’re partial to the tomato basil soup and the lunch salads, especially the delicately flavored curried chicken. A combo of the two is light enough to allow for something sweet afterward. Beer & wine.

(From December 2009) Bistro decor and fresh ingredients raise this cafe above the usual hotel coffee shop. Among the star attractions: the basil pesto chicken panino, featuring organic tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, and the Texas steak salad, with pepper jack cheese and chipotle-spiked ranch dressing. For dinner, the chicken pot pie coddles even the fussiest palate. Bar.

(From July 2008) We usually choose a scoop of one of the 26 made-on-the-premises flavors, but this time the nineteenth-century ambience inspired us to order a chocolate soda with vanilla ice cream; the intensity of the dark chocolate paired with the sweet, creamy vanilla was a marvel. Other classic fountain faves: malts, sundaes, phosphates, and a supersized banana split.

(From December 2009) Tempted though we were by the case of baked pies and cookies, we stuck to our guns. One of us ordered a salad of field greens topped with strips of grilled chicken and tender orbs of goat cheese, while the other chose the oddly named Southern corn cake—actually Mexican in concept, topped as it was with pico de gallo, sour cream, and avocado. Beer & wine.

(From September 2008) The savory scent of woodsmoke lured us in for a feast of lean brisket and homemade sausage flanked by coleslaw and green beans. In the dim coolness, other diners tore into yard bird (that’s smoked chicken to you) and baked potatoes stuffed with North Carolina–style chipped beef. We finished with a big-enough-for-two slice of well-spiked rum cake. Leon’s will deliver for a minimum order of $30. Beer & wine.

(From July 2009) Tucked away in the newly redeveloping blocks west of 25th Street, this pared-down bistro serves up Central and Eastern European home cooking. We started with field greens tossed with currants and sliced almonds in a tart-sweet vinaigrette, then went on to a bowl of heartwarming German borscht: tomato, cabbage, onions, and seasoned ground meat, with nary a beet in sight. Beer & wine.

(From November 2009) On mellow days, there’s no better place to enjoy the view of the beach than from the balcony of this family-friendly spot, where the burgers are juicy and the German fare as hearty as you’d expect. Bearing the founder’s surname, the Lichtenfeldt Burger melds the two themes with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and German mustard topping a plump patty on a whole wheat bun. Beer & wine.

(From October 2009) The concept is simple: Mix up a big pot of seductively dark and murky gumbo and let patrons decide if they want the Little Daddy (a generous serving) or Big Daddy (just shy of intimidating) and whether to add seafood, chicken and sausage, beef, or a combination thereof. If gumbo’s not your thing, there’s plenty of crab claws, oysters, po’boys, and more. Beer & wine.

(From July 2009) Customers line up to order, the food comes out quick, and the ambience is no-frills, but there the resemblance to fast food ends. Our smoked chicken breast was moist under a crispy skin, and the boudin delivered a subtle kick of pepper and fresh parsley. Sides of red beans and rice and jambalaya left us feeling as if we’d crossed the Sabine.
