’Boomer’ Volunteers Needed For Environmentally Focused Neighborhood Projects

While Spring may not be in full swing until March 20, The Senior Source’s Boomer Green Teams are gearing up for community service projects that will make an impact all season long. As the name implies, Boomer Green Teams connect volunteers age 47 to 65 (Boomers) with community projects that address environmental issues. Boomer Green Teams’ projects include “Light Bulb Switch Outs,†replacing inefficient incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones in the homes of low-income seniors; tree plantings; Earth Day festivities; community garden experiences and much more. Upcoming Boomer Green Teams events include:
Light Bulb Switch Outs
Saturday, March 12 – 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Wednesday, March 16 – 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Saturday, March 19 – 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 6 – 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 9 – 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, April 14 – 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Teams of Boomers will work in East Dallas, Oak Cliff and other Dallas neighborhoods showing seniors how they can use less energy and save money by helping them switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Volunteers will meet at The Senior Source, 3910 Harry Hines Blvd. in Dallas, for instructions before being dispatched to specific areas. Threes for Trees – Tree Planting
Wednesday, March 23 – 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
A partnership between the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Parks and Recreation Department, For the Love of the Lake and Friends of Oak Cliff Park, this is an opportunity for Boomer Green Teams to join other volunteers as they plant up to 100 trees in two local parks depending upon how many three-point shots are made by Mav’s players. Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable “tree planting†attire, and can meet at Lake Cliff Park, 1200 Zang Blvd. in Dallas, and T.P. Hill at White Rock Lake, at 9 a.m. This event is free to attend, however, RSVP is required to Susan Grundy at sgrundy@theseniorsource.com or (214) 525-6134.
Reforestation Of White Rock Lake – Tree Planting
Saturday, March 26 – 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Boomer Green Teams volunteers can assist the City of Dallas in planting new trees in areas of the lake where other trees are aging and declining. In honor of White Rock Lake’s 100-Year Celebration, cake will be served at 1 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable “tree planting†attire and can meet at T.P. Hill at White Rock Lake, at 10 a.m. This event is free to attend, however, RSVP is required to Susan Grundy at sgrundy@theseniorsource.com or (214) 525-6134.
Earth Day Dallas Festival
Friday, April 22 – Beginning at 10 a.m.
Saturday, April 23 – Beginning at 10 a.m.
Boomer Green Teams volunteers are invited participate in four-hour shifts during the new Earth Day Celebration held in Dallas Arts District. Opportunities will include assisting with the day’s festivities, helping at check-in, working at the Boomer Green Team booth and much more. This event is free to attend, however, RSVP is required to Susan Grundy at sgrundy@theseniorsource.com or (214) 525-6134.
