Grupo Corpo

Thursday & Friday, March 14 & 15, 2012 - 8 p.m.
Ticket prices: $35-80
Known for consistently challenging perceptions of ballet and modern dance, Brazil’s contemporary dance company Grupo Corpo makes its Houston debut. The Company features a broad range of elements, from minimalism and rootsy modernity to vigorous pop and urban sounds, mixing in traditional ballet, modern dance, and cultural flair, to create an elegant and sensual performance for all to see. Directed by members of the Pederneiras family for 36 years, Grupo Corpo exudes a strong collective spirit amongst its 22 dancers who are limber and balletic, yet exuberant and grounded in percussive Afro-Brazilian footwork. Grupo Corpo’s program will include Rodrigo Pederneira’s Ímã, inspired by the scientific law of magnetism as particles either repel or attract one another, followed by his Sem mim, or “Without Me,” which evokes the rhythms of the sea, with an original score set to the “Sea of Vigo” song cycle of medieval troubadour Martín Codax and a set that transfigures during the show to represent the sea, mountains, clouds and a boat.
