This February, Austin will have the opportunity to embrace the geometric form through two complementary, abstract artists. The exhibit, “Confluence” will include paintings on canvas and wood panels from Michael Kessler and both freestanding and wall sculpture from Matt Devine. The talented pair will be at an opening reception on Saturday, February 2, from 6-9 p.m. to launch the show and all art will be available for purchase. New Mexico based, Michael Kessler creates nature-inspired paintings that merge geometric elements with biomorphism. His works are characterized by large fields of color that are activated by organic linear structures that have been visually and physically woven into a grid structure which consists of thick slabs of paint. By applying several layers of paint with self-adapted, trowel-like tools, Michael Kessler reveals organic and geometric structures under translucent skins of paint. “I work not only with color, but texture, transparency, luminosity and rhythm,” Kessler says. He believes his work is literal; the layers reveal the beauty beneath, rather than a hidden narrative. Metal sculptor Matt Devine was born in Salem, MA but currently resides in San Diego, CA. Devine’s sculptures are known for their clean and harmonizing aesthetic, which often redefine gravity. His artwork is seamless and evokes weightlessness, yet is fabricated using heavy metals such as steel, aluminum and bronze. In his own words, “The search for harmony and balance is the driving forcer behind my work. The use of systematic repetition, intentional minimalism and controlled multiplicity are themes through which to quell inner struggle.” WHEN: An opening reception with both artists in attendance will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2013, from 6-9 p.m. The event is open to the public and an RSVP is requested. Art will be available for acquisition and will be signed by the artists. The exhibit will be on display through February 28, 2013. Gallery hours: Tuesday-Saturday: 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. (except for times mentioned above) WHERE: Russell Collection Fine Art, 1137 West 6th St., Austin, Texas 78703-5338 RSVP Requested: (512) 478-4440 www.russell-collection.com, info@russell-collectioncom Over a decade ago, entrepreneur Lisa Russell transformed Austin’s arts landscape when she opened Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery.
