After Baylor Hospital saved her husband’s life following a heart attack; Kathleen Norman has spent one day a week for the past 29 years giving back to the organization that extended her husband’s life. Because of this selfless devotion, Edgemere senior living community is recognizing Norman as the third recipient of the 2010 Edgemere Salute to Seniors Award.  Janet Winkler, volunteer coordinator for Baylor Hospital, and Denise Renfro, volunteer manager for Baylor, nominated Norman for the honor.

“Mrs. Norman has volunteered 10,480 hours here at Baylor Hospital,” said Winkler. “She has touched the lives of millions of patients, and has generously given her time to help out at our information desk and most recently in our surgery waiting area. Her caring spirit and devotion to our patients makes their experience here even more personal.”

The Edgemere Salute to Seniors Award is presented quarterly to honor an individual who is making a difference in their community.  Qualified nominees are active adults age 62 and above who volunteer their time and talents to their communities, and who also exemplify leadership, spirit, and citizenship.

“Mrs. Norman has spent an incredible number of hours giving back to the hospital that saved her husband,” said Tori Mallad, director of sales and marketing at Edgemere.  “She truly wants to help others who are experiencing stressful situations while in the hospital environment. Her generosity towards others is incredibly inspiring.”

“I think most people need someone to listen and recognize them as worthwhile and important,” said Norman. “I felt like Baylor saved my husband’s life and I needed to give back something. It’s also helpful to me when I can help someone else.”

Norman currently resides in Dallas, and is a longtime member of Wilshire Baptist Church. She spends time at Baylor and also likes to visit residents at local retirement communities.

Baylor Health Care System’s mission is to serve all people through exemplary health care, education, research and community service. Norman and volunteers like her help further the mission of Baylor by adding a personal touch to patient care. For more information visit www.baylorhealth.com.
