This fall season was all about finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease as more than 60 residents, family members, and employees of Querencia at Barton Creek senior living community gathered to support efforts to end Alzheimer’s disease in the 19th annual Austin Memory Walk. The fundraising efforts resulted in a total donation by Querencia at Barton Creek of over $15,017.44. The final donation from Querencia will include a gift from the Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation (SQLC) Charitable Foundation which will match 50 percent of the funds raised by residents and staff.
“Everyone is so proud of our efforts this year,” said Emily Yeager, lifestyles director at Querencia. “The past few months have been spent raisng all of the funds possible to help fight this terrible disease. Each year brings a new found hope that a cure will be found.”
In the months leading up to the walk, Querencia hosted a series of events to raise funds and awareness for the cause. The community held a “2010 Querencia Pet Mascot” contest in which residents and staff made donations to vote on their favorite community pet.
To prepare for the Memory Walk, Querencia residents met every Saturday six weeks prior to the event to train. The “team in training” would gather to walk the 1.25 mile walking trail that surrounds the community.
“The Memory Walk is an event that our residents and staff look forward to each year,” said Leslie Dominguez, director of sales and marketing at Querencia. “It proves to be a wonderful way for the entire community to come together for a great cause.”
In 2008, SQLC founded the SQLC Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that operates to make grants to and support programs and services that advance the interests of seniors, from Alzheimer’s research to education.
