Trauma Funding in Texas

posted in politics [more from this topic] by memorial_hermann on Monday, June 20th 2011 at 3:46 PM.

Since 1993, the Designated Trauma Facility and EMS fund has helped offset the cost of trauma care in Texas. Since its creation in 2004, a portion of the proceeds from the Driver Responsibility Program have been the main source of funding. Yet each year, the Legislature appropriates less than half of the amount designated for trauma centers.

Having a statewide trauma system benefits everyone, and the Legislature should support this resource with funds intended for that purpose. Simply put, we must strengthen the state’s trauma system safety net. Otherwise, we run the serious risk of stretching it too thinly and reducing survival rates for critically injured patients in the region.
