With summer just around the corner, shaping upbecomes top priority. Looking goodpoolside is not the only benefit of establishing a healthy diet and a regularexercise routine.
KimBellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx, explains that physicalexercise is actually good for the brain.
“Exerciseactivates neurons, which in turn, coordinate your muscles, vision and balance,”Bellini said. “The energy peak that occurs during exercise may actuallyincrease our thinking and memory capability the rest of the time. Exercisebuilds our ability to process information.”
In a recentstudy published by “The Journal of Physiology,” the University of Tsukuba inJapan found animals that exercised regularly had higher levels of glycogens, orthe stored carbohydrates critical for the health of cells throughout the brain, than sedentary animals.
“This studyshows that exercise may be a key to enhancing cognitive function,” Bellinisaid. “We already know that exercise and sports use cognitive skills – andexercising those skills builds capability in every arena.”
Bellinisuggests trying a new exercise to challenge the brain this summer. “Take adance class, try tai chi or yoga,” she said. “Your brain will grow and yourbody will benefit too.”
She alsorecommends considering mental work-outs to get the brain in shape – whether itis for students who want to return stronger to school next year or for adultswho want to boost productivity at work.
“Try some gamesthat build cognitive skills, read more or take a class to learn a new skill,”she said.
The WoodlandsLearningRx also offers a 12-week course for individuals that fits neatly intothe summer months for those who are looking for a mental training boot camp.
Creating waysto build cognitive skills is one of the main goals of The Woodlands LearningRx,a brain-training center that offers unique programs to transform a student’sability to learn at a core level. The center is located at 4840 West PantherCreek, Suite 205.
