Still Life

Thirty-five years ago Dallas—and the country—was gripped by the tragic story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. But after the newspapers moved on, another story was quietly unfolding, one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s fierce love.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

The 50 Greatest Hamburgers In Texas

A gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers in the state that invented the burger, including the Toro (#4), the Stodg (#6), the Miss Hattie (#28), and, in our top slot, a miracle of meat served only on Sundays. No wonder they call it the Lord’s day.

Innocence Lost

Since August 23, 1992, Anthony Graves has been behind bars for the gruesome murder of a family in Somerville. There was no clear motive, no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, and the only witness against him recanted, declaring again and again before his death, in 2000, that Graves didn’t do it. If he didn’t, the truth will come out. Won’t it?

Right Place, Right Time

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. Is it enough to carry him past Kay Bailey Hutchison and all the way to the White House?

Cousins BBQ tastes like chain bbq. The ribs tasted tart and were dry. On a positive note, the ranch beans and tater salad were tasty. When Cousins grows up it wants to be Smitty’s or City Market. Save your money.

I just tried Stanley’s in Tyler, and I am wondering how on earth it made the list! The brisket tasted like it came out of a steamer tray, and the sausage had no texture to it at all. Maybe the ribs are great, I wouldn’t know, they were sold out; but one good "signature" meat, when the rest is nowhere near great, shouldn’t be enough to make it on.

My favorite spot was always Joe’s BBQ in Alvin, TX. I’ve eaten at plenty of places, and no one has ever been able to beat their food.

I have to agree with Mark here. How in the world do you leave The Salt Lick off any "Best Of" list? If you ask anyone in Austin, you will be hard pressed to find anyone who won’t recommend The Salt Lick first. Nice try guys. Too bad Texas Monthly can’t get Texas Barbecue right.

Ahhhhh....The Salt Lick in Driftwood? You guys ARE a bunch of Yankees. Thanks for the list. I’ll try them out and rate them on Yelp.

Notably missing, to me, is Smitty’s in Brownwood. His goat is the best I’ve ever eaten and I have searched the southern states and Mexico for decades for cabrito. Smitty must be pushing 80 and still cooks every day. He’s literally bent permanently over at a 90 degree angle, though I suspect that is from service to his country and not from his love of bbq. He was stooped that way when I was in junior high in the 70’s. Don’t miss this bbq and make sure and meet Smitty while you’re there!

As soon as I saw New Zion Bar-B-Que in Huntsville on the list, I knew you Yankees didn’t know what you were talking about. Give us an article on barbeque, not kitsch.

I am very disappointed that Pops Pit BBQ in Brookshire TX did not make the top 50. I will drove over 45 minutes just to get a slice beef brisket sandwich. I have had any bbq that comes close to the great smoked taste found at Pops.

Excellent choices for the Top 50. A new goal of mine is to visit as many as I can. Another excellent choice is the Hard 8 BBQ in Stephenville. I’m excited about an upcoming trip to Lexington to try out Snow’s. Thanks for the great article.

I am very surprised that Smokey Joe’s in Harlingen is listed. I think the restuarant is okay but the best BBQ in Harlingen is at Rio Grande Grill on Van Buren Street (next to La Placita). They have the best brisket in town, hands down! You guys need to visit next time you’re in town.
