Ring of Fire

It was one of the most passionately observed traditions on any college campus in the country. Then, on November 18, 1999, a week before it was scheduled to burn, the Texas A&M Bonfire collapsed in the middle of the night, killing twelve Aggies. Ten years later, as the university continues to wrestle with the tragedy—and debate whether Bonfire should ever return to campus—the students and alumni who chopped logs, hauled timber, and built stack talk about what they saw, what they lost, and how their school was changed forever.

Below the Surface

Since 1996, a legal battle has raged between ExxonMobil and a powerful South Texas ranching clan that believes the oil company sabotaged wells on the family property. Even after a ruling by the state Supreme Court earlier this year, the bitter feud shows no signs of letting up. Maybe that’s because it’s about something far more important than money.

With God On Their Side

The decision to abruptly remove 437 children from a fundamentalist Mormon compound in Eldorado sparked the largest custody battle in U.S. history. But now that the last child’s case has been settled and all the kids are back home, a question still lingers: What really happened on the Yearning for Zion Ranch?

The 50 Greatest Hamburgers In Texas

A gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers in the state that invented the burger, including the Toro (#4), the Stodg (#6), the Miss Hattie (#28), and, in our top slot, a miracle of meat served only on Sundays. No wonder they call it the Lord’s day.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

My wife and I must gone on an off day or something, because I was expecting greatness, and got something terrible instead. We did a road trip from Snow’s, to Louie Mueller, to Southside, to Smitty’s, to Kreuz, and finally Blacks. I’d rank Kreuz in the bottom two (actually, it was one of the worst BBQ experiences I’ve ever had to date). The brisket was very tough and had very little flavor. The sausage was terrible. That’s right, terrible. Was this mutton sausage? It was incredibly gamey. One bite and I said I was finished, even though I toughed through it and took one more bite just to make sure. The clod faired a little better flavor wise, but was very dry like it had smoked or sat too long. Overall, our trip through Texas BBQ Mecca was not exactly the transcendental experience that I had hoped for. Smitty’s was definitely worth the trip though, as was Snows. I’d like to give Louie Mueller another shot some time. I think I’ll have do Kreuz again some time, because the way everyone raves about, I had to have just gone on an off day. It was a Saturday, around 2pm. Should not have been that bad though.

Kruetz’s and Black’s BBQ are overrated. I was at both of them in April 09 with my brother. The 2 of us grew up in Texas and love bbq. We found that both of these BBQ places serve very dry, tasteless meat. There are much better places than these 2. Luling BBQ for a start and there is a little dive in Gonzales that I believe is called Sonny’s. better. There is also Riley’s in Blanco and Moffat BBQ near Moffat. We tried Luling, Riley’s and Sonny’s on the same trip as Kruetz’s and Blacks. If you are near Temple on a Thursday or Friday, there is a man called "Tooter" that sells bbq. Thursdays from 10:30 till 1:00 he is at Graham’s Service Station on 3rd St in Temple and at the Town and Country Store on I35 in Troy on Friday’s. Tooter serves some of the best bbq I have ever had. The judges have bought into what they have seen on the Travel channel.

My first experience was back in 2000 and it was awesome!!! Since then I try to go there when I can since I use to live in San Antonio. The best place to eat BBQ. I recommend this place to everyone.

I just got back from there, and everything was amazing. The brisket is perfect and the sausage outstanding. Can’t wait to go back!

I’m from NYC and I’m obsessed with bbq. My girlfriend took me to Lockhart, TX for my birthday. Kreuz was unreal, the food was incredible. I can’t wait to go back. That was the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten.
