Still Life

Thirty-five years ago Dallas—and the country—was gripped by the tragic story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. But after the newspapers moved on, another story was quietly unfolding, one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s fierce love.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

The 50 Greatest Hamburgers In Texas

A gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers in the state that invented the burger, including the Toro (#4), the Stodg (#6), the Miss Hattie (#28), and, in our top slot, a miracle of meat served only on Sundays. No wonder they call it the Lord’s day.

Innocence Lost

Since August 23, 1992, Anthony Graves has been behind bars for the gruesome murder of a family in Somerville. There was no clear motive, no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, and the only witness against him recanted, declaring again and again before his death, in 2000, that Graves didn’t do it. If he didn’t, the truth will come out. Won’t it?

Right Place, Right Time

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. Is it enough to carry him past Kay Bailey Hutchison and all the way to the White House?

If comments here are any indication, Kreuz demise as a contender for barbecue supremacy began in late August of 2009, 10 years after it bequeathed the epicenter of the barbecue world to Smitty’s and abandoned itself to a self-built Siberia north of town. My own experiences one year before and after agree, as Kreuz never comes close to achieving the taste, texture or temperature of the other Top 5 establishments. In fact, Kreuz is no longer a stop during the two or three pilgrimages we take annually to the Barbecue Capital of Texas. For all the size, machinery and attraction that was invested in the new location, one would think that Kreuz must be unsinkable; but all that remains is a sad testament to the monument that pride built. Pride goeth before the fall. For the heritage of its own name and for the quantity of meat and wood it currently wastes, let’s hope that Kreuz finds repentance leading to succulent salvation. If it does not, then it certainly built for itself a tomb to rival the pyramids of Egypt.

I just took a beautiful drive over back roads from west of Austin with the top-down on my convertible to have lunch at Kreuz Market. The drive was wonderful, but the lunch was horrible. I had brisket, a couple of spare ribs and a link of sausage. The brisket was dry as a bone and had no flavor, the sausage was mushy and tasteless. Only the ribs were passable. To top it off, I asked for some barbecue sauce to give the brisket some flavor and some moisture and was told they didn’t have any. I also asked for a fork. Likewise, they didn’t have any. I don’t know how this place stays in business. I won’t be back and neither should you. Was this really in the Texas Monthly Top 5? You must have made a mistake.

I don’t know what people think was good about this place. We had saw on show on tv a few monthes back and decided to drive 4 hrs frm dls to try it out. It was a great disappointment to say the least. The brisket had no flavor at all in fact it tasted like roast all we need was potatoes and carrots but it was tender unlike Smittys.the ribs were ok but the sausage was terrible.we won’t be back that’s for sure.

Since my grandpa is from Lockhart, Kreuz is always near and dear to my heart. I will admit, after the split and the new facility it hasn’t been the same, but its still good bbq. No matter if you like it or not, be grateful- Colorado (where I am now) has some of the most blandest bbq I’ve ever eaten.

My wife and I must gone on an off day or something, because I was expecting greatness, and got something terrible instead. We did a road trip from Snow’s, to Louie Mueller, to Southside, to Smitty’s, to Kreuz, and finally Blacks. I’d rank Kreuz in the bottom two (actually, it was one of the worst BBQ experiences I’ve ever had to date). The brisket was very tough and had very little flavor. The sausage was terrible. That’s right, terrible. Was this mutton sausage? It was incredibly gamey. One bite and I said I was finished, even though I toughed through it and took one more bite just to make sure. The clod faired a little better flavor wise, but was very dry like it had smoked or sat too long. Overall, our trip through Texas BBQ Mecca was not exactly the transcendental experience that I had hoped for. Smitty’s was definitely worth the trip though, as was Snows. I’d like to give Louie Mueller another shot some time. I think I’ll have do Kreuz again some time, because the way everyone raves about, I had to have just gone on an off day. It was a Saturday, around 2pm. Should not have been that bad though.

Kruetz’s and Black’s BBQ are overrated. I was at both of them in April 09 with my brother. The 2 of us grew up in Texas and love bbq. We found that both of these BBQ places serve very dry, tasteless meat. There are much better places than these 2. Luling BBQ for a start and there is a little dive in Gonzales that I believe is called Sonny’s. better. There is also Riley’s in Blanco and Moffat BBQ near Moffat. We tried Luling, Riley’s and Sonny’s on the same trip as Kruetz’s and Blacks. If you are near Temple on a Thursday or Friday, there is a man called "Tooter" that sells bbq. Thursdays from 10:30 till 1:00 he is at Graham’s Service Station on 3rd St in Temple and at the Town and Country Store on I35 in Troy on Friday’s. Tooter serves some of the best bbq I have ever had. The judges have bought into what they have seen on the Travel channel.
