Still Life

Thirty-five years ago Dallas—and the country—was gripped by the tragic story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. But after the newspapers moved on, another story was quietly unfolding, one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s fierce love.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

The 50 Greatest Hamburgers In Texas

A gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers in the state that invented the burger, including the Toro (#4), the Stodg (#6), the Miss Hattie (#28), and, in our top slot, a miracle of meat served only on Sundays. No wonder they call it the Lord’s day.

Innocence Lost

Since August 23, 1992, Anthony Graves has been behind bars for the gruesome murder of a family in Somerville. There was no clear motive, no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, and the only witness against him recanted, declaring again and again before his death, in 2000, that Graves didn’t do it. If he didn’t, the truth will come out. Won’t it?

Right Place, Right Time

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. It’s a shame what we’ve let the yuppies do to one of Houston’s true neighborhoods on Washington Ave. ---just like they’ve destoyed the Heights. They suck all the true character out of every place they touch.

Good Afternoon Ms. Swartz, First Thank you so much for your, I hope first, article on The WAve, The Washington District. It is as you have laid out the "Main Street" of Super Neighborhood No. 22. In 2007 we produced WOW the Parade - Washington On Washington the Parade, in 2008 we did WOW Day'08 "A Walk on the Avenues" and now in 2009 we are putting on Ride the WAve to be take place on March 7, 2009. Events will take place not only along Washington Avenue, but Houston Avenue, Shepherd/Durham, and Westcott. We will have "Green" booths among other set up at Spotts Park. Some of the business that you have mentioned as well as some of our other great business in our super neighborhood will have "Special Items" that day. Washington Avenue was once called "The Road West" one of its first official functions was to lead to Washington-On-The Brazos for the signing of our Deceleration of Independence from Mexico. Washington Avenue was the beginning of I-10. Thank you for talking about our GateWay to downtown. Please come back and take a much closer look at what all is housed here in our hood. I bet you will be pleasently suprized. Come Catch the WAve for a great Ride! Have a great New Year. With my regards, c. Patrick McIlvain Chair Special Events Washington Avenue/Memorial Park Super Neighborhood No. 22
