Gary, just "drop it and step away" from Sportswriting. Stick with your assignments on "Styles of Texans" and "Viagra". I’m sure there were great Sportswriters before you that bit their tongue and did not criticise your articles and folksy style.
It is a different world, different readers and different players and coaches. To make it personal with Kirt is a little "bush league". While not Great, Justice is a Good sportswriter. Who knows? He may be Great one day.
I’ve always thought Sportswriters to be a part of their own "Fraternity". So "cover your Brothers back" and not "attack from his front".

So, to summarize, Richard Justice may be a boring, pedestrian, run-of-the-mill writer, but Gary Cartwright is just a sad old relic who could have used a good, ’real’ editor.
Good to know.

Richard, you are touchier than an old cook. Get on the St John’s wort, would ya? Sportswriters getting liquored up and missing games? I thought that was just for players!

I am only 32, and don’t spend my time reading writers from past generations to speak knowledgeably. However, for any current sportswriter to contend that the sports media world of the 2000’s could be considered journalism is beyond me. The sports writers react to the ESPN culture, which the conglomerate has changed into a male soap opera. There’s no debate.
Are there still quality journalists? Sure. Is Justice one? Most likely (I’m from Washington DC and have no interest in Houston sports). But in most arguments, exceptions to the rule don’t get to speak for the group.

Columnists today need to have thicker skin and avoid these kind of snarky responses. It only makes them look petty.

Gary’s a good ol’ geezer, but hasn’t kept up with the very good writings of sportswriters in today’s decling newspaper market. In Houston, for example, Richard Justice runs circles around Mickey Herzog: and San Antonio’s sportswriters are far better than they used to be. But,Gary is caught up in his past glory days in the DFW papers that also produced some of the worst & most biased writers I’ve ever read. Still, Gary remains a good ol’ geezer, who should proof-read his outdated & incorrect comments.
