I just registerd with you folks, and this was the first article that I read. I found it interesting to read about how someone else hhandles living living in the Trans Pecos. We moved to Hudspeth County in 2003, I am retired Army, and we had lived in the desert west of Phoenix Arizona for 11 years before coming here. We both are living in our hanger home on a long, thin 80 acres with our own 4,700 foot runway. (We both fly). We both live on my monthly Army Medical Retirement check, and live totally off grid. All of our electric hand tools are nuclear powered, but the reactor is 93 million miles away, we recharge them with our solar system. After the spring winds lie down, we will be erecting two 750 watt windplants that together cost us less than 500 dollars with all new parts.
You would be surprised what you can do with a GG.M. single wire alternator from the nearest auto parts store.
Again, I really engoyed the first issue, and can’t wait for the next. Sabrina "Brie" Hill

This article is simply amazing! It’s good to see others "living off the grid" in such a eco-friendly, sustainable way of life. It’s very similar to what we are doing in Costa Rica on our 780 acre, sustainable villa community called "Osa Mountain Village."
I would love to write an article about our vision for changing the world through sustainablitity and using permaculture design and have it featured here on Texas Monthly. You guys are the best!
