You Aren’t Here

A lack of reverence for the Alamo’s sacred battleground has turned much of the iconic site into a place no one remembers.

Still Life

Thirty-five years ago Dallas—and the country—was gripped by the tragic story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. But after the newspapers moved on, another story was quietly unfolding, one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s fierce love.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

The 50 Greatest Hamburgers In Texas

A gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers in the state that invented the burger, including the Toro (#4), the Stodg (#6), the Miss Hattie (#28), and, in our top slot, a miracle of meat served only on Sundays. No wonder they call it the Lord’s day.

Innocence Lost

Since August 23, 1992, Anthony Graves has been behind bars for the gruesome murder of a family in Somerville. There was no clear motive, no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, and the only witness against him recanted, declaring again and again before his death, in 2000, that Graves didn’t do it. If he didn’t, the truth will come out. Won’t it?

Right Place, Right Time

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. Is it enough to carry him past Kay Bailey Hutchison and all the way to the White House?

I agree wholeheartedly with Toby & Lloyd.I also think Nugent is just playing off the right wing thing to be these days.Do any of Obama’s gun nut critics including Nugent realize they can conceal carry now in national parks because of a bill Obama recently signed into law?

ITs a fact that uncle ted is a great patriot.its an honor as a homegrown, reared texan thru and thru to have a michigan whackmaster want to come and live and call texas his home.week after week in his articles he writes for the waco paper, its evident that he is one of the few that gets it right time and again.i grew up doing the concerts and ted was the one who gave his all to his music.ted has always stood for truth, justice, and the american way.i stand with ya,ted.long live stranglehold.

Can someone please explain to me how this trash talking, disrespectful, foul mouthed, ex rock star from Michigan came to grace the cover of the official magazine of Texas. I, myself was a Ted Nugent fan back in the day and I agree with some of his views and I disagree with some of his views but I whole heartily disagree with his tactics. To tell the President of our United States that he’s a piece of and that Hillary Clinton might want to "ride one of these into the sunset, you worthless ," is inexcusable and the very opitomy of anti-Texan behavior. We as Texans are taught above all else to be respectful of others whether we agree with them or not. I defend his right to have and share his own views but I do not condone his antics. Have we actually ran out of great Texans to right articles about or to put on the cover? If the editors of this great magazine that I love think that that’s the case, then please contact me because I can personally think of about a million that deserve to be there before Nugent.

"Uncle Ted" is someone who expresses much of the thoughts, views, frustrations and feelings a lot of us out here only wish we could openly express to a wide audience. He’s a super-patriot! An awesome American who gives a damn about HIS country. OUR country... I only wish there were more patriotic and caring celebrities willing to stand with him.

I am an oldfart Nuge rocker who has subscribed off and on to Texas monthly since 1973, and I am writing to express my reaffirmation as a Texan at this month’s issue. Ted Nugent is an American original and principled intellect. He has done more to remind me that even dyed-in-the-wool liberals like me still have the capacity for open-mindedness and the ability for celebrate our differences while embracing our commonalities. By putting Ted on your cover, and associating his genious with that dimwitted idiot Rick White, you have reached a conclusion that the two have something in common which is an insult to Ted. I think you should make a contribution to a foodbank or childrens’ organization on behalf of The Nuge. Please recycle my subscription. Lloyd Guthrie
